John Murdock had been working for the agency for 18 years and his resignation comes during an exodus of longtime federal workers and scientists An 18-year veteran of the US Department of the Interior has resigned in protest from the sprawling federal agency, denouncing “a deeply troubling assault on the rule of the law” that took place at the department under Donald Trump. John Murdock, an attorney and self-described conservative Christian, began working for the agency’s legal office in 2002. In his resignation letter, first sent to his supervisor earlier this year and obtained exclusively by the Guardian and Public Domain, Murdock cites “glaring legal flaws” he witnessed within the agency during the course of the Trump administration, as well as concerns over offshore oil and gas drilling, the aggressive push to expand fossil fuels and the flouting of environmental regulation.

BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration has been awarded a $146.69 million Air Force contract for its Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System, according to a recent notice . Procurement of the electronic warfare hardware is associated with F-15EX Eagle II Lots 7 and 8, the service wrote in its Sept. 30 announcement. EPAWSS brings improved radar warning, geolocation, situational awareness, self-protection and jamming compared to the legacy Tactical Electronic Warfare System found on F-15E Strike Eagles. The Air Force on Sept. 29 meanwhile awarded Boeing a $2.38 billion contract to produce 22 F-15EX Eagle II's, making use of reconciliation money made available by last year's One Big Beautiful Bill. That contract covers Lot 7 of the program and brings the total number of aircraft Boeing is currently expected to produce for the service to 120. In its fiscal year 2027 budget request, the Air Force introduced a plan to nearly double its overall F-15EX buy -- from 129 jets to 267 -- to replace the older F-15E fleet. Four astronauts pulled up at International Space Station after eight-hour express flight led by Jessica Watkins Four astronauts pulled up at the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday after launching on an eight-hour express that set a US speed record, and that created further history with the first Black woman to lead a crew to orbit. SpaceX launched commander Jessica Watkins and her crew for Nasa after a three-week delay to fix their Dragon capsule’s leaking fuel system. Thick clouds threatened all morning to halt the countdown but skies cleared enough to allow a safe liftoff from Cape Canaveral at 11.10am (1510 GMT).

The Air Force will award software licenses to a single vendor to provide the initial Collaborative Combat Aircraft increment one mission autonomy one year before the program reaches initial operational capability, a service official told Inside Defense . “Mission autonomy capabilities required for initial fielding will be ready close to a year ahead of when the CCA [increment one] program reaches IOC,” the official said. The Air Force official would not disclose the specific IOC target date for the earliest tranche of CCAs, citing classification. The service is aiming, however, to select and award a contract to the initial CCA mission autonomy provider as soon as the summer of 2027, Air Force leaders told reporters in June. Anduril Industries and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems are meanwhile on track to begin producing the drone wingmen once the fiscal year 2027 budget is appropriated, as the service is pursuing separate contests for the first increment’s mission autonomy and air vehicle. The autonomy effort is taking a different, continuous approach than the traditional down-select process in which software vendors are constantly iterating and competing for integration…

Applications opened yesterday for the penultimate phase of the Defense Department's mass-drone procurement initiative, as the fiscal year draws to a close and the department prepares to operate under a continuing resolution. "Our goal hasn't changed: get affordable, lethal drones to the warfighters at scale, built on a US supply chain," according to the Phase III launch announcement on the program’s website. Phase III allocates $450 million for the Pentagon to buy roughly 60,000 drones -- split evenly across two mission sets -- with options for the department to buy up to 40,000 more from standout vendors, DOD said. Phase III will be divided across two mission areas introduced in the prior Drone Dominance Program phase – deep-strike and close-quarter-battle capabilities -- at increased difficulty and an accelerated pace, the announcement states. Systems competing under both mission sets will be tested in Global Navigation Satellite System- and communications-denied environments. The deep-strike mission area requires systems to "find, fix, finish" targets at ranges of approximately 15-20 kilometers in contested environments, while the close-quarter-battle concentration requires…

Annette Young is pleased to welcome Victor GAETAN, Senior International Correspondent for the National Catholic Register. He sees Pope Leo XIV's visit to France as more than a successful pastoral journey. He says it offers a window into the intellectual and political character of Leo's nascent papacy. What has been particularly striking is the breadth of his appeal: Leo has been welcomed by people of different faiths and across France's political spectrum. He also sees a direct intellectual connection between the present Pope and Leo XIII, particularly through Rerum Novarum, which confronted the social consequences of technological and economic transformation at the end of the XIX century.

Anduril Industries and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems cannot begin Collaborative Combat Aircraft production without a fiscal year 2027 budget, both firms said this month as Congress' funding limbo extends into December. “What we communicate to the Air Force is that we have invested and have gone as far as we can,” Erin Simpson, Anduril’s vice president for strategy execution, told reporters this month at the Air and Space Forces Association’s Air, Space and Cyber conference. “We will not have a cold start to start production in [20]27. We will have assets rolling through. That said, even a company like ours can only do so much without procurement dollars,” she added. Erin Ogunkeye is pleased to welcome Colleen Dulle, Vatican correspondent for America magazine and author of "Struck Down, Not Destroyed". She came to Pope Leo’s visit to France expecting measured diplomacy but was struck by how deeply political the trip became. She observed a pope trying to articulate a vision of Europe shaped simultaneously by its Christian inheritance, its history of conflict, its encounter with other cultures, and its responsibility to pursue peace. Pontiff also uses visit to Catholic shrine at Lourdes to criticise assisted dying as ‘false compassion’ The pope has called on the Catholic church to heal “deep wounds” and “painful errors”, before a meeting with survivors of child sexual abuse as he continues his four-day visit to France. Addressing a crowd in a large field near the Catholic shrine of Lourdes on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV called on the church to reckon with its past, without directly referencing sexual abuse scandals in France that affected at least 330,000 children over seven decades.

What GAO Found Remote and isolated military installations are often away from population centers or located in austere environments, making the delivery of critical support services, such as health care or housing, challenging. GAO found that while remote and isolated installations consistently faced challenges in areas such as recruiting and retaining civilian personnel, the causes and severity of those challenges differed by location. For example, in Alaska, Eielson Air Force Base had the most vacant positions (428) while Fort Greely and Clear Space Force Station had no vacant critical support services positions. In 2024, the Department of Defense (DOD) issued guidance for designating installations as remote and isolated. As of May 2026, the Departments of the Army and Navy compiled lists of remote and isolated installations in accordance with this guidance. The Department of the Air Force has opted not to make a formal designation at this time. A DOD official stated that efforts to fully develop the risk assessment process outlined in the same guidance will begin once the initial designations of remote and isolated installations are complete. However, this guidance does not…
